    The Flying Eagle Cent was the first small one-cent piece struck by the United States of America. It was minted first in 1856 as a pattern piece and then produced for mass circulation in the following two years, 1857 and 1858. Public reception for the new coin was strong and positive, and during its short life span, over 40 million Flying Eagle Cents were produced. Produced only at the Philadelphia mint, there were difficulties striking the design due to the eagle design itself and the harder alloy composition of 88% copper and 12% nickel. The Flying Eagle Cent was replaced by the Indian Cent in 1859.
